Tarp Systems for Semi Trucks - Why Do You Need a Tarp System?

Depending on your application, a durable tarp to contain your materials securely is a necessity. If you haul a loose material such as gravel or stones, or waste materials, a tarp will help keep the roads safe and free of debris and the environment free of pollution or contaminants. Many states have also created and enacted regulations regarding tarps and penalties can be issued to those who do not comply.

How Do Tarp Systems Work?

The most common tarp systems are low mount and high mount systems. The ‘high’ and ‘low’ refer to where the tarp arms are mounted to the dump truck body. You will want to choose a mount style depending on the material you are dumping so that the arms don’t get in the way.

What Kind of Tarp Material Do I Need?

One of the most common materials in the heavy-duty truck industry is black mesh. It is lightweight and breathable, but it’s important to note that it can snag easily and is not watertight.

Another common material is asphalt. This material is chemically treated to withstand extremely high temperatures. These tarps are extremely durable, flexible, and water-resistant.

Vinyl is also an option and is perfect for temperature-controlled materials or materials that need to stay dry. A vinyl tarp is very durable and waterproof but can become difficult to work with in cold weather. Some materials are also known to stick to vinyl, such as asphalt (LoAlbo Enterprises, LLC).
